Robinhood Markets’ rapid rise revolutionizes the US trading landscape

Robinhood Markets is experiencing rapid growth and fundamentally altering the established rules of the financial industry. The name itself deliberately evokes the idea of taking from the rich to give to the poor, a concept the platform’s co-founders, Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, wished to conjure from the company’s inception.

In 2013, when high commissions and significant entry barriers still dominated the financial markets, the notion of granting access to anyone—not merely institutional investors—at zero cost was nothing short of a small-scale revolution. This commitment to a more open, equal, and democratic form of finance materialized as a simple, mobile-first application primarily aimed at young people. Within a few short years, it has attracted millions of new users, becoming the quintessential symbol of U.S. retail trading.

Founded in April 2013, Robinhood Markets is headquartered in Menlo Park, California. The online financial services firm is primarily recognized for its namesake mobile application, which allows users to invest in stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on U.S. exchanges without paying trading fees. This no-commission policy represented a significant shift in the retail brokerage sector.

Unlike conventional brokers, the company operates entirely online, targeting a young, digitally-savvy demographic, often composed of beginner investors. The fundamental goal was born from the observation that while major financial institutions traded at negligible costs, everyday investors were still burdened by steep commissions. The founders’ stated mission was to democratize finance for all by making it simpler and more affordable for everyone to begin investing through an alternative, inclusive platform.

The app’s first iteration officially launched in March 2015 after generating a waiting list of millions of potential users. The original product was extremely straightforward, allowing commission-free buying and selling of stocks and ETFs, a clear departure from traditional brokers. The mobile-first design, featuring an intuitive interface, contributed to its rapid adoption, particularly among younger users.
