Leapmotor opens new innovation centre in Monaco

The expansion of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers in Europe continues to take shape, and this time it is Leapmotor taking a significant step forward. The Hangzhou-based brand has inaugurated its first European innovation center in Munich, marking an important milestone in its international growth strategy.

The new Leapmotor Europe Innovation Centre is located in the Parkstadt Schwabing district and represents the company’s first European hub dedicated to research and development. Until now, innovation activities were concentrated exclusively in China, between Hangzhou and Shanghai. With this opening, Europe officially becomes part of the group’s strategic map. At least in its initial phase, the structure will remain intentionally lean: around 100 employees will work within a shared office complex. There is no monumental headquarters or symbolic skyscraper, but rather a pragmatic approach focused on understanding the European market from within. The goal is clear: closely study local tastes, needs, and habits in order to adapt products and business strategies with precision and effectiveness.

The results achieved by Leapmotor confirm the strength of this approach. In 2024, the company recorded sales of over 596,000 vehicles, with more than 67,000 units exported. These figures, combined with the strategic partnership with Stellantis through the Leapmotor International joint venture, led to the first annual net profit in the brand’s history. A milestone that marks a turning point and reinforces its push toward international expansion.

During the inauguration, a new model was also unveiled, set to enter the European market by the end of the year. Developed under the “Tech-Natural Aesthetics 2.0” philosophy, the vehicle aims to appeal to Western consumers with a design tailored to a global audience. Europe will therefore serve as a key testing ground for the brand’s ability to compete on an international scale.

Leapmotor’s arrival in Munich is not an isolated case. In recent years, other Chinese players such as Nio, Xpeng and Xiaomi have also chosen the Bavarian city as a base for their European operations. This reflects a broader strategy, with Chinese brands steadily establishing roots across the continent to strengthen their position in the electric mobility market.

In this context, Munich is increasingly emerging as a key hub for automotive innovation, while Leapmotor clearly signals its ambition to play a leading role in the future of global mobility.
